What is block scheduling?

Block scheduling is how the school day is structured. In a traditional high school day, students attended six periods that lasted fifty minutes each. Students took courses for the full year. At JCCHS, students attend four periods that last ninety minutes each. Students complete a year's worth of work in one semester (e.g. from August to December.) Students have four classes first semster, then four different classes second semester. There are a few classes that must be taken all year. Examples are advanced placement classes, band, and chorus. Other classes may be taken all year if the student desires. An example is JROTC.

JCCHS switched to block scheduling 7 years ago. Several of our teachers attended the Southern Regional Educational Board conference and heard about it. They returned and requested that the school consider using the block scheduling structure. After two years of intensive study by the entire faculty, 98% of the faculty voted to switch to block scheduling. Our experience with this structure has been excellent. [top]

How can I obtain a certificate of attendance for my driver's license?

Certificates of attendance for driver's license may be obtained from the counseling office. The certificate will be available one calendar week after the student signs up for it. There are no exceptions made. If the student has made an appointent with the DMV for a test and has now sign up for an attendance certificate, or the ADAP card, he/she will have to make a new appointment. See more information about driver's licenses.

How do I obtain my school records?

Complete the form at the bottom of the PantherHelp's home page. Or, contact our registrar, Ms. Faulkner (706/367-5003 Extension 232), or the counseling department secretary, Ms. Hardy (706/367-5003 Extension 254), to obtain school records or have them sent to others. Official records should be mailed from our office directly to colleges, employers, and others. In your request, be sure to provide the name you were going by when in high school, your birth date, and a phone number.[top]

How do I catch a bus in the morning?

You may find out about busses by calling 706/367-5151 and asking for the bus shop. In general, on the first morning you plan to ride a bus, you should be on a main road by 7:00 a.m. The bus driver will then make adjustments to the route if necessary. If you see other school age children in your neighborhood, ask when and where the bus comes. In the morning all students (elementary, middle, high) ride the same bus. The busses go to the elementary schools and middle/high school students then ride an express bus to their schools.[top]

How do I register a student for school?

To register for school, first call the counseling department at 706/367-5003 or contact us via E-mail to make an appointment. If you come to the school without an appointment, it is likely that you will have a long wait or have to return at a later time. The counselors stay very busy with our students and parents. A parent/guardian with legal custody must accompany the student to the registration. See a complete explanation of the registration process.

What records do I need to have to register a student?

In order to register students who have been in high school previously, at the time of the registration we must have records indicating what the students has received credit in. For some reason, some schools refuse to give parents/students records or send records to us without a signed records request. Of course, this makes it very difficult because the parent must come to our school to sign a record request, then return when the records arrive. The federal privacy act allows schools to send records to other schools that a student intends to enroll in without a signed request. We suggest parents remind other schools of that fact if the school refuses to provide records.

Below are the necessary records for registration:
  • If you are registering prior to the beginning of the school year, the necessary records are:
    • For a student who will be a first time ninth grader:
      • A report card indicating that the student was promoted to the ninth grade.
      • If the student registered for high school in the previous setting, a listing of high school courses that the previous school recommended for ninth grade.
    • For a student who has already attended high school.
      • A copy of the student's high school record. This should be obtained from the previous high school prior to your registration appointment. We must know with certainty what credit the student has earned in order to select classes. An unofficial transcript is sufficient for registration. Most schools will provide this;however, for some reason, some don't. If the previous school will not provide an unofficial transcript, please ask the school to fax the record to the Jackson County Comprehensive High School Counseling office. The fax number is (706)367-7275.
      • If the student registered for classes in the previous setting, a listing of courses that the previous school recommended for the following year.
  • If you are registering a student after the school year has begun, the necessary records are:
    • A withdrawal form from the previous school. The withdrawal form should contain the courses the student was taking in the previous school, and the grades that had been earned at the time of withdrawal. [top]

How is credit determined for home schooled and private schooled students who transfer?

Students who earn credit in settings that have accreditation accepted by the state of Georgia and by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools will have that credit automatically transferred to our schools. Students from home schooling or from schools that lack such accredation must earn credit by examination. See a complete explanation of how credit is earned from non-accredited situations.

What do I do if someone wants to fight me?

At JCCHS, fighting is not tolerated. If a fight occurs, in the vast majority of cases both parties are suspended, no matter who "started" the fight. A student who fights may be assigned to the alternative school or expelled from school as well. Repeat fighters will certainly be assigned to the alternative school or expelled. Legal authorities may also be called.

If you are involved in a situation which may lead to a fight, leave immediately. Tell a teacher or an administrator, or come directly to the counseling office. A counselor will talk to you and the other person involved. When it is appropriate, the JCCHS conflict management team will be asked to help resolve the conflict. Conflict management team members are students who have been carefully screened and trained to help other students. The sessions are monitored by a counselor or administrator and follow-up sessions are held.[top]

What is the JCCHS dress code?
